Thrombosis

Thrombosis is the formation of a blood clot (thrombus) within a blood vessel. This clot can partially or completely block blood flow, leading to serious complications like deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), stroke, or heart attack.

It is sometimes also known as Blood clot, thrombus, venous or arterial clot

Thrombosis Overview

Understanding Causes, Symptoms, and Risk Factors

Causes

Slow or stagnant blood flow from prolonged immobility (e.g. travel, hospital stays)
Blood vessel damage from injury, surgery, or inflammation
Hypercoagulability (clot-prone blood) from genetic conditions, cancer, pregnancy, hormone therapy
Atherosclerosis  which is fatty plaque buildup in arteries can rupture and trigger clots
Medical conditions heart failure, atrial fibrillation, infections, inflammatory diseases

Symptoms

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

  • Swelling (usually in one leg)
  • Pain or tenderness in the calf or thigh
  • Warmth or redness over the area

Pulmonary Embolism (PE)

  • Sudden shortness of breath
  • Chest pain (especially on deep breathing)
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Coughing up blood

Arterial Thrombosis

  • Stroke: Sudden weakness, facial droop, slurred speech
  • Heart attack: Chest pain, arm/jaw pain, sweating, nausea

Risk Factors

Conditions like Factor V Leiden

More common in men than women.

Conditions such as heart failure and  inflammatory bowel disease

Risk increases with age particularly over 60

Obesity

Smoking

Immobility

Frequently Asked Questions

Erythrocytosis does not usually cause kidney failure directly. However, there are important links between the two. This is especially true when erythrocytosis is due to kidney disease or too much erythropoietin (EPO) production.

No, giving up smoking does not cause erythrocytosis. In fact, it usually has the opposite effect.

Erythrocytosis becomes dangerous when the elevated red blood cell count leads to complications like blood clots, stroke, or organ damage. The level of risk depends on the severity, the underlying cause, and whether it is being monitored or treated.
