Skin Cancer

Diagnosing skin cancer involves a thorough process starting with a detailed consultation and physical examination by our Consultants. Here’s an overview of the steps involved:

Initial Consultation: We will inquire about your health history and specific concerns regarding your skin, including the duration and changes in the lesion, and your sun exposure history.

Physical Examination: A comprehensive examination of the suspicious skin lesion and surrounding areas is conducted, assessing its size, shape, colour, and other features. The rest of your skin is also examined for any additional abnormalities.

Biopsy: If the lesion appears suspicious, a biopsy is performed. A small tissue sample is taken from the lesion and sent to a lab for analysis to confirm the presence of cancer and determine its type.

Staging: The combination of examination findings, biopsy results, and additional tests helps determine the stage of the skin cancer, guiding the treatment plan.

Treatment Options: Treatment modalities for skin cancer include:

Surgical Excision: Removal of the lesion under local anaesthesia, ensuring complete removal with minimal scarring.

Skin Cancer Surgery: Depending on the tumour size and extent, various surgical techniques are employed, focusing on complete removal while preserving appearance and function.

For small skin cancers, surgical excision involves removing the lesion along with a margin of healthy skin, followed by wound closure with stitches. Dissolvable stitches may be used, eliminating the need for removal.
