Borderline Personality Disorder

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a mental health condition characterized by significant emotional instability, difficulty maintaining stable relationships, and a poor self-image. People with BPD may experience intense mood swings, fear of abandonment, and impulsive behaviors that can lead to self-destructive actions. These individuals may struggle to regulate their emotions and often feel misunderstood or disconnected from others.

BPD Overview

Understanding Causes, Symptoms, and Risk Factors

Causes

  • Trauma
  • Neglect
  • Abuse during childhood
  • Genetics

Symptoms include:

  • pattern of unstable relationships
  • self-harm or suicidal behaviours
  • intense anger or difficulty controlling emotions
  • feelings of emptiness, and a chronic fear of abandonment
  • These symptoms often cause significant distress in interpersonal relationships and can affect daily functioning.

Can BPD be prevented?

Therapy (DBT), healthy coping strategies, and emotional regulation.

While bipolar disorder is a lifelong condition, it can be effectively managed with medication (such as mood stabilizers, antipsychotics, and antidepressants) and psychotherapy. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and family therapy can help individuals and their loved ones better understand the disorder, manage stress, and cope with the emotional challenges associated with it.
