Dissociative disorders are the disorders which entangle some interruptions or discontinuities in consciousness, identity, memory, or perception. These conditions may make one feel detached with their thoughts, body or even their environment hence they may find it hard to carry on with the normalcy of life.

Causes

  • Barbarity or abuse

  • Stress or fear (extreme)
  • Experience with traumatic event
  • Neglect of children in their childhood or emotional deprivation during childhood
  • Any accidents or medical trauma
  • Long term emotional or psychological abuse
  • Substance use
  • Biological and genetic elements

Symptoms vary depending on the specific dissociative disorder

  • Forgetfulness (amnesia)

  • Depersonalisation (feeling detached to self)
  • Experiencing a lack of reality in the world (derealisation)
  • Confusion of identity or Identity change
  • Swings in mood or conduct Miniature
  • Empty spaces in memory of personal things or old events
  • Out-of-body experiences
  • Trouble with life activities
  • The emotions numbed
  • Altered interpretation of things/persons

Risk Factors

Dissociation is most usually triggered by abuse that is physical, sexual, or emotional early in life.

Dissociative coping mechanisms can be caused by a lack of emotional nurturing or other fundamentals during childhood.

Experiencing violence in the household may lead to lifelong fear and dissociation as a type of psychological coping mechanism.

Can Dissociative Disorders be prevented?

 

Treatment typically involves:

  • Psychotherapy usually focusing on trauma in which therapy is offered to overcome past maltreatment or negligence
    Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) are commonly applied to teach people to control their emotions and compact traumatic memories
    Other symptoms that accompany such a condition as co-occurring prescription of depression or anxiety may also be treated through medication
