Agoraphobia

Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder that causes individuals to fear situations or places where they might feel trapped or unable to escape. People with agoraphobia may avoid crowded areas, public transport, or even leaving their homes due to fear of having a panic attack or being unable to seek help if needed. This disorder often develops as a response to repeated panic attacks, leading individuals to feel fearful of environments where they previously experienced distressing symptoms.

Can Agoraphobia be prevented?

There is no guaranteed way to prevent agoraphobia, early treatment can significantly reduce symptoms.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) has been found to be highly effective in treating agoraphobia, as it helps individuals gradually confront feared situations and manage their anxiety in healthy ways. Exposure therapy, a form of CBT, is also commonly used to help people slowly face and desensitise themselves to anxiety-inducing scenarios. Medication, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), can also be beneficial for some individuals.
