Causes

  • Smoking (main cause)
  • Long-term exposure to air pollutants or workplace irritants (dust, fumes, chemicals)

  • Dust
  • Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency- a rare genetic condition
  • Severe or frequent lung infections in early life may affect lung development and increase risk later in life
  • Risk increases with age, especially over 40, due to cumulative exposure to irritants and natural decline in lung function

Uncontrolled or long-term asthma can contribute to airway damage, especially if combined with smoking

From biomass fuels (wood, charcoal, dung) used for cooking/heating, especially in poorly ventilated homes

Can COPD be prevented?

  • Stop smoking (or avoid starting)
  • Get tested early – especially if you’re in a risk group
  • Stay active to maintain lung capacity
  • Get vaccinated against flu and pneumonia
  • Avoid air pollution and workplace irritants
