Emphysema
Emphysema is a chronic lung condition where the air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs become damaged and lose their elasticity. This reduces the surface area for gas exchange, making it harder to breathe and get enough oxygen. It’s one of the main conditions under the umbrella of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
Emphysema Overview
Understanding Causes, Symptoms, and Risk Factors
Causes
- Smoking – the number one cause
- Long-term exposure to air pollutants – such as chemical fumes or dust
- Genetic factors – including Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, a rare inherited condition
- History of recurrent lung infections – especially during childhood or early adulthood
- Ageing lungs – gradual breakdown of lung tissue with age
Symptoms
- Gradual shortness of breath, especially with activity
- Wheezing or chest tightness
- Chronic cough, often with little or no mucus
- Feeling tired or weak during daily tasks
- Weight loss in later stages
- In advanced cases: barrel chest appearance and cyanosis (bluish lips or fingertips)
Risk Factors
Can Anaemia be prevented?
Emphysema cannot be reversed, but it is largely preventable and progression can be slowed with early action:
Quit smoking: The most effective step you can take
Avoid air pollutants: Wear protection at work and limit exposure at home
Get vaccinated: Influenza, pneumococcal, and COVID-19 vaccines help prevent infections that worsen symptoms
Regular lung function testing: Early detection through spirometry and other tests allows for earlier intervention
Exercise and maintain a healthy weight: Pulmonary rehab can help improve breathing capacity
Manage chronic conditions: Like asthma, diabetes, or heart disease, to reduce the overall burden on the lungs
