Phobias

One of the confusions of anxiety disorder is phobias which is the excessive, irrational fear of a certain object, a person, or a situation. Although fears are a normal experience among many individuals, phobias are so strong that they have the ability to cause serious problems that can disrupt the normal way of life. Some typical phobias are heights (acrophobia), spiders (arachnophobia) or flying (aviophobia).

The risk can be raised by a genetic connection, the more so in case parents or close relatives have the same faults.

Abuse whether physical, emotional or sexual at a time when the individual is still so young can largely influence the development of personality.

Can Phobias be prevented?

Genetics or brain development may be factors, which cause Personality Disorders and these cannot be prevented. But with early intervention and good life experiences the risk or severity of these disorders can be very less or absent.

  • CBT practice, including Exposure Therapy: allows one to overcome the fear in a comfortable and gradual manner by slowly subjecting the person to the feared object or feared situation in a safe and controlled manner
  • Drugs: drugs such as the SSRIs or anti-anxiety drugs can be offered to assist the patient to deal with the fear of phobias.
