Mole/ Lump Removal- Frequently Asked Questions

Most skin issues are removed using a combination of surgery and laser to achieve the best cosmetic result. Local anaesthetic is used to ensure the procedure is painless. The commonest way to remove a protrusion is by skin excision. A derma blade will be used to remove the lesion parallel to the surface of the skin. This may leave a small superficial wound which is then cauterised with a laser to stop any bleeding. Occasionally we use an elliptical excision for moles that are suspicious or where the cosmetic result is better.

The whole process takes about 20 minutes and healing can take up to 2 weeks.IT may take a little take a little longer if any stitches are necessary.

We don’t normally see a patient again as wounds heal quickly but if we send away moles for testing, we will write to you with the results within 4 weeks but do not hesitate to contact us with any problems.

All procedures leave a small scar, but it will be minimal. Rarely some people with dark or light skin have an abnormal response to healing and end up with larger scars.

Risk are low as procedures are simple and safe. However, there may be side effects such as infection, bleeding, or scarring, these are discussed by the consultant as are subject to procedure.

In most cases you can return to normal activities the same day. If you have any dressings the consultant will tell you when it can be renewed. The wound can be red for 2-3 weeks but will settle. If there is any increasing pain or redness, consult your doctor. For elliptical incisions keep the wound dry for 2 days, do not engage in exercise that will stretch the wound ad call doctor if increasing pain or redness as it could be a sign of infection.
