Mole Mapping
What exactly is mole mapping?
For those with numerous moles, especially new or sizable ones, or a familial background of skin cancer, considering mole mapping can be beneficial.
Mole mapping involves identifying any new moles or alterations to existing ones, which can serve as potential indicators of skin cancer. This systematic approach aids in promptly detecting such changes, facilitating quicker diagnosis and treatment.
Regular mole checks, such as through mole mapping, are crucial for the early detection of melanoma skin cancer.
Here’s What You Should Expect.
During your appointment, our Consultant will meticulously examine your moles. Any displaying signs of melanoma will undergo thorough evaluation using a specialised magnifying tool known as a dermatoscope.
Additionally, your mole mapping service might encompass total body photography, which assists in detecting any abnormal moles while maintaining a comprehensive record of their precise size, colour, and location throughout your body, including areas like your palms and the soles of your feet. In certain instances, suspicious moles may be excised on the same day.
Your consultant will advise you on whether a biopsy or the removal of any abnormal moles is necessary. If a mole is excised during your appointment, it will undergo examination for cancer. Your consultant will then communicate the results and inform you of any further treatment required.
Consistent mole monitoring is pivotal for early melanoma detection. Consequently, your consultant might suggest another appointment in six or twelve months. They’ll provide guidance on what signs to watch out for, enabling you to continue monitoring any mole changes between appointments. Moreover, they’ll offer recommendations on steps you can take to reduce your risk of skin cancer.
