Health Scans (Ultrasound)

Looking for a Ultrasound Scan near you?

An Ultrasound provides valuable information for diagnosing various conditions and guiding medical procedures, without the use of radiation, making it a safe method. This imaging technique utilizes high-frequency sound waves emitted by a handheld device called an ultrasound probe. These sound waves, though inaudible, bounce off different parts of the body, creating a real-time moving image displayed on a monitor during the scan.

Ultrasound technology is employed across diverse medical specialties to investigate and detect anomalies.

In orthopaedics, musculoskeletal ultrasound aids in assessing muscle tears, nerve issues, and arthritis.

Doppler scans are used in cardiac examinations to estimate blood flow through vessels.

Gynaecology relies on transvaginal ultrasound to evaluate pelvic conditions. Renal ultrasound in urology assists in examining the bladder, kidneys, and prostate for size, shape, and health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Wear comfortable loose clothing, preferably 2 pieces if the abdomen or pelvis needs to be examined. If you are having an abdomen scan, then we require you to fast for 6 hours. You can drink plenty of fluids but please avoid anything with milk as it can create gas in the abdomen and makes it difficult to scan. If you are having a pelvis scan, please finish drinking 1 litre of water an hour before as this distends the bladder and enables us to see the uterus and ovaries clearly.

15-30 minutes during which time you may be asked to change position to allow the area to be examined from different angles.

Ultrasound scans are a simple examination, they are non-invasive and are not painful. There may be varying degrees of discomfort from pressure against the area that is examined.

For diagnostic ultrasound there are no known harmful effects on humans, however research is ongoing.

The ultrasound scanner consists of a computer, a video display screen and a probe that is used to scan the body.

The ultrasound scan report will be sent to you within 48 hours of the examination. This can be sent to your GP at the patients request.
