Common Myths About Anaemia and Iron Infusions – Bolton Patients Ask
Everyone has got an opinion about anaemia and iron drips but not everything you hear is true. Let’s clear up some of the biggest myths we hear in Bolton clinics.
Myth 1: “Only old people get anaemia”
Not true! We see all ages at Chequers—from toddlers to grandmas. Anyone can get low on iron, especially after illness, surgery, pregnancy, or if you are just run down.
Myth 2: “Iron infusions hurt or are dangerous”
Lie. Medications have side effects and they range from common to very rare. Infusions are prescribed by a Consultant Haematologist and they will always ensure the benefit outweighs the risk. They will also share the risks so you are clear how the infusion will benefit you or not.
Myth 3: “You have to give up tea forever”
You do not need to quit tea—just have it between meals, not with your iron tablets or iron-rich meals. Everything in moderation!
Myth 4: “If you eat enough greens, you’ll never get anaemia”
Wish it was that easy. Some bodies just do not absorb iron well. Even the healthiest eater can get anaemia if their gut is not working right, or if they lose iron faster than they can replace it.
Myth 5: “Iron tablets work instantly”
Nope. Tablets can take weeks (sometimes months) to make a difference. Infusions work quicker, but it still takes time to build up your red blood cells.
