Nasal Cauterisation

Looking for a way to stop/control your nosebleeds near you?

Nosebleeds in children are frequently caused by the rupture of blood vessels in the anterior part of the nose. This occurrence is particularly prevalent among younger children. Littleā€™s area is where blood vessels come together. It is near the surface, so it can easily bleed.

In addition to trauma or dryness, another contributing factor is mild nasal vestibulitis, a low grade infection of the nasal vestibule (the front part of the nasal cavity). Mild nasal vestibulitis can cause irritation, crusting, and tenderness, and is often triggered by frequent nose picking, viral infections, or allergies. These factors weaken the nasal lining, increasing the likelihood of nosebleeds.

Treatment

For many children, antibiotic ointments like Bactroban (applied twice daily for two weeks) can effectively stop nosebleeds. However, if the nosebleeds continue, a procedure called cauterisation may be recommended. During this outpatient procedure, a nasal surgeon employs silver nitrate to cauterise the blood vessels following the application of a local anaesthetic nasal spray.

Cauterisation is usually carried out on one side of the septum at a time to minimise the slight risk of septal perforation. For the best long-term results, multiple sessions (usually 3) are spaced about six weeks apart.

Patients from Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Wigan and surrounding areas choose Chequers Health for professional cauterisation treatment.
