How will a Pelvic Ultrasound help me?

A pelvic ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test that uses sound waves to create detailed images of the organs in your pelvic area, including the uterus, ovaries, and cervix. It helps detect abnormalities such as cysts, fibroids, infections, or other potential concerns.

Pelvic Ultrasound

How do I prepare for my Pelvic Ultrasound?

Bladder: Finish drinking 1 litre of water 1 hour before the scan for the external part of the Ultrasound. Then empty your bladder before the internal scan.

Clothes: Wear loose, comfortable clothes; you may get a gown.

Avoid: Don’t use vaginal creams, medications, or douching for 24 hours.

Relax: Take deep breaths and try to stay calm, it only takes a few minutes.

After: You can go back to normal activities right away.

Is it safe and will it hurt?

Yes, a pelvic ultrasound is completely safe and painless.

It uses sound waves (not radiation) to create images of your internal organs, so there are no known side effects. During the scan, a small amount of gel is applied to your skin, and the sonographer gently moves a handheld probe over your pelvis. You may feel light pressure, but there is no discomfort or pain.

The internal (transvaginal) ultrasound used in pelvic  assessments is generally very safe and usually minimally uncomfortable.

This makes it suitable for people of all ages, including pregnant patients and those requiring repeat imaging.

Frequently Asked Questions

A pelvic ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test that uses sound waves to create detailed images of the organs in your pelvic area, including the uterus, ovaries, and cervix. It helps detect abnormalities such as cysts, fibroids, infections, or other potential concerns.

We offer two main types:

  • Transabdominal ultrasound: The scan is performed over the lower abdomen. This is painless and usually requires a full bladder.

  • Transvaginal ultrasound: A small probe is gently inserted into the vagina for a closer and more detailed view. This is especially useful for examining ovaries and detecting smaller abnormalities.

No referral is required. You can book a private pelvic ultrasound directly with Chequers Health for prompt assessment and peace of mind.

  • Transabdominal scan: You may need a full bladder, so we’ll advise you to drink water beforehand.

  • Transvaginal scan: Usually no special preparation is required, but we’ll provide clear instructions when you book your appointment.

No, pelvic ultrasounds are generally painless. You may feel slight pressure during the transvaginal scan, but it is brief and well-tolerated by most patients.

Most pelvic ultrasounds take around 15–30 minutes, depending on the complexity of the examination.

We offer same-day results, along with a complete digital report and high-resolution images if needed. These can be shared easily with your GP or other healthcare providers.
