Frequently Asked Questions

A prostate ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test that uses sound waves to assess the size, shape, and condition of the prostate gland. It is often used to investigate urinary symptoms or monitor prostate health.
You may be referred for a prostate scan if you have symptoms such as frequent urination, difficulty urinating, or a weak urine stream. It may also be used to evaluate prostate size or support further diagnostic testing.
Most commonly, a transabdominal scan is done through the lower abdomen. In some cases, a transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) may be used for more detailed imaging. Your clinician will explain which is appropriate.
You may be asked to drink water and attend with a full bladder for a transabdominal scan. If a transrectal scan is planned, additional preparation may be advised in advance.
A transabdominal scan is painless. A transrectal scan may cause slight discomfort, but it is generally well tolerated and takes only a few minutes.
Ultrasound may detect prostate enlargement or irregularities, but it cannot confirm cancer. If anything concerning is found, your clinician may recommend additional tests, such as a PSA blood test or biopsy.
A prostate scan usually takes around 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the method and complexity of the case.
No. A PSA test is a blood test measuring prostate-specific antigen levels, while a scan provides visual imaging of the prostate. They may be used together as part of a broader prostate health assessment.
Ultrasound is considered very safe and involves no radiation. Risks are minimal, and no recovery time is required.
The scan will be reviewed by a qualified clinician or radiologist. Results are typically available within a few days and will be discussed with you by your referring doctor or a clinician at Chequers Health.

I was extremely low on iron and can’t take iron tablets. The NHS couldn’t help me quickly enough and I honestly feared for my life.
I had two iron infusions and now feel back to good health.
The staff , doctors and the nurse were second to none .
They suggested I get further checks done via my GP so as to find the reasons why I had such a dangerously low level .
My GP sent an urgent request to the hospital and I have just had an endoscopy, a colonoscopy and a CT scan and await the results.
None of this would have been possible to be completed within 4 weeks without Chequers help and advice.
Thank you for giving me my life back.
