How will a Prostate Ultrasound help me?

A prostate ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of the prostate gland and surrounding structures. This particular scan is external (performed through the lower abdomen) and includes evaluation of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder (KUB).

Prostate Ultrasound

What the scan includes

Kidneys – size, shape, and presence of stones or obstruction

Ureters (upper portion) – dilation or blockage

Bladder – wall thickness, shape, and post-void residual volume

Prostate gland – overall size, volume, echotexture, and any focal abnormalities

Note: This is not a transrectal ultrasound (TRUS). It is done through the lower abdomen, making it more comfortable and suitable for general prostate and urinary assessment.

Purpose of the Scan

Assess prostate size and shape

Detect enlargement (benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH)

Evaluate for masses, cysts, or calcifications

Check bladder emptying and detect residual urine

Identify urinary tract obstructions or stones

Examine the kidneys and ureters for secondary changes due to prostate or bladder issues

Frequently Asked Questions

No — the scan is completely painless. It’s performed externally on your lower abdomen using a small handheld probe and ultrasound gel. There are no needles, no injections, and no internal probes for this type of exam.

A full bladder acts as an acoustic window, allowing clearer visualization of your prostate and bladder. It also helps assess how well your bladder empties after you urinate.

The scan usually takes about 15 to 20 minutes. The exact time may vary depending on how easily the structures can be seen and whether a post-void (after urination) scan is needed.

An external prostate ultrasound (like this one) is done through the lower abdomen and is mainly for assessing prostate size, bladder, and kidneys. A small amount of water based gel is applied to the abdomen and the sonographer slides a probe over to take the images.

In most cases, the sonographer will review your images the same day, and your referring doctor will receive a report within 24–48 hours. Your doctor will then discuss the findings and any next steps with you.

Finish drinking a litre an hour before the scan. You will need a full bladder for the scan.
