GP vs A&E
When Should You See a GP vs go to A&E? (And how to make the right choice for your health)
When you’re not feeling well, it can be hard to know whether you should book an appointment with your GP or head straight to A&E (Accident & Emergency). Choosing the right service not only ensures you get the best care — it also helps relieve pressure on emergency departments.
Here’s a simple guide to help you decide.
See a GP When:
Your condition is non-life-threatening but still needs medical attention. This includes:
-
Persistent symptoms (e.g. cough, fever, rash, tiredness)
-
Mild infections (e.g. ear, throat, urine)
-
Ongoing pain (e.g. headaches, back pain, joint aches)
-
Mental health concerns (e.g. low mood, anxiety, sleep problems)
-
Medication issues (e.g. side effects, renewals)
-
Health screenings or blood tests
-
Chronic conditions (e.g. asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure)
-
Minor injuries that aren’t urgent (e.g. sprains, cuts, skin concerns)
Private GP clinics often offer same-day appointments, faster testing, and more time with your doctor — ideal for busy people or when NHS wait times are long.
Go to A&E When:
You or someone else has a serious or life-threatening condition, such as:
-
Chest pain or signs of a heart attack
-
Sudden difficulty breathing
-
Heavy bleeding that won’t stop
-
Severe injuries (e.g. fractures, head trauma, burns)
-
Sudden confusion or collapse
-
Signs of a stroke (Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech issues)
-
Seizures, especially in someone who hasn’t had them before
-
Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)
-
Poisoning or overdose
Call 999 in an emergency or if someone’s life is at risk.
