Dermatofibroma (Skin Growths)
Dermatofibromas, also known as benign fibrous histiocytomas, are harmless skin growths with an unclear cause. They can emerge following minor skin injuries like cuts, scratches, or insect bites, or spontaneously without any identifiable trigger.
Typically less than half an inch in diameter, dermatofibromas result from an excessive growth of various cell types within the dermis, the skin’s second layer. Their colour can range from pink or red to brown or grey. While mostly a cosmetic concern, they may sometimes become tender, itchy, or painful.
More common in adults than children, and in women than men, dermatofibromas often appear on frequently exposed body parts like arms and legs but can develop anywhere on the body. Individuals may have multiple dermatofibromas simultaneously in different areas.
The Dermatofibroma Removal Procedure:
The journey to removing dermatofibromas starts with an initial consultation. Our skincare specialist examines the growth and takes your medical history. If removal is recommended, an appointment is arranged.
The procedure, performed under local anaesthesia, involves numbing the area around the dermatofibroma. A small sting may be felt during anaesthesia administration. The growth is then surgically excised, and the area stitched up.
While scarring is possible due to the depth of dermatofibroma cells, it’s usually minimal. We provide guidance on scar care during healing, ensuring it fades over time.
Recovery is typically swift, with most individuals able to resume normal activities immediately after the procedure.
