Iron Infusion NHS – Who Qualifies in Bolton & How to Get One

Iron Infusion on the NHS: Who Qualifies in Bolton & What To Expect

If your GP’s mentioned an NHS iron infusion and you’re not sure what’s what, you’re not the only one. Many patients have tried every iron tablet the pharmacy stocks, and still feel tired. NHS iron therapy is a lifeline for people across Bolton and the North West.

Who actually gets a free iron infusion on the NHS?

Let’s keep it simple:

  • Your blood tests show you’re low on iron (anaemia)

  • You’ve tried tablets and they’ve not worked, or made you sick

  • Sometimes it’s for people with tummy issues (Crohn’s, coeliac, ulcerative colitis) who can’t absorb iron effectively

  • Pregnant? The NHS can help if you’re struggling with anaemia and you have not responded well with oral iron or you have

  • Your GP or hospital team checks if you fit the criteria for iron infusion in the UK. Not everyone gets it straight away, but if you tick those boxes, you’ll get an NHS referral for iron infusion.

How does the NHS iron infusion referral work?

  • You see your GP (or sometimes a hospital specialist)

  • They check your symptoms and run a few blood tests

  • If you’re eligible, you’ll get a letter or phone call with your appointment with a Haematologist

  • Finally, you will attend a clinic where the iron drip is administered

Is it any different to going private?

The NHS iron drip is just the same as private. The only difference is you might wait a bit longer for your appointment.

NHS iron infusion cost:

Zero – covered by the NHS if you fit the criteria. (Private iron infusion cost varies)

What to expect at your NHS iron therapy appointment

  • You’ll check in, chat to the nurse about how you’re feeling, and then settle in for your iron drip (takes about an hour)

  • Bring a book, your phone, or a friend to keep you company most people say it’s over before you know it
