Dr. Meswani is a highly skilled haematologist who completed her FCRPath for Haematology in 2017. Since then, she has gained extensive experience working at various esteemed hospitals across the UK, including Chester, Whiston, Wigan, Wrightington and Leigh, and West Lancashire. She is currently part of the team at Lancashire Teaching Hospital, where she provides expert haematology consultations.
Dr. Meswani specialises in the management of conditions related to iron balance, offering tailored care for patients suffering from iron deficiency or iron overload. She has significant expertise in administering iron infusions to address iron deficiency anaemia and performing therapeutic venesections for patients with conditions such as haemochromatosis and polycythaemia.
In addition to these services, Dr. Meswani leads her hospital in the administration of transfusions and chemotherapy, demonstrating her leadership and expertise in complex treatments. With extensive experience in managing haematological malignancies, she provides compassionate and cutting-edge care for patients facing these challenging conditions.

Dr. Gharib is a senior Consultant Haematologist and has been Consultant Haematologist since 2005. He has a long experience in diagnosing and treating various benign and malignant blood disorders including leukaemia, lymphomas and myelomas in both adults and children.
He is the local Principal Investigator for the first national trial looking at treating cancer induced thrombosis with the new oral anti-coagulant, Rivaroxaban.
At Chequers we have an onsite laboratory, under the clinical supervision of Dr Gharib offering the following services both to our patients and to GPs and Clinicians across the North West.

Clinical Chemistry is used to analyse samples of body fluids such as blood, urine and CSF. to help clinicians in the diagnosis and monitoring of disease.
What does the service provide?
The Service is to aid the identification and prevention with the management of illnesses and diseases in the body for example diabetes, thyroid problems, infertility, heart attacks, meningitis and cystic fibrosis.
Blood Test / Phlebotomy
If you attend for a blood test you will meet one of our Phlebotomists who is a qualified healthcare worker trained in taking blood samples with the minimum of discomfort. They appreciate that some patients may be nervous about these tests, but will do everything possible to make it as quick and stress-free.
Haematology
Non-malignant:
Hereditary disorders – Haemoglobinopathies, membrane defects.
Acquired disorders – Anaemia’s, immune cytopenias, marrow failure syndromes.
Coagulation and thrombotic disorders.
Malignant:
Acute and chronic leukaemia’s.
Lymphoma/lymphoproliferative disorders.

Low iron levels can lead to symptoms such as:

You will need to come into clinic for a short period of time before the infusion, for the duration of the infusion and you will then be asked to stay for further monitoring for about 30 minutes after the infusion.
Intravenous iron is an extremely safe and effective therapy. Some of the side effects that have been reported are:

If you are taking oral iron, you should stop this the day before you come into our clinic for your Iron Infusion.

You may rarely experience muscle or joint pains; these can be managed with simple painkillers such as paracetamol.
Simple painkillers for any joint pain can be taken when you go home following your completed monitoring period at our clinic.
It is not anticipated that your iron infusion will affect your ability to undertake your usual activities.
Your nurse will let you know if you need to come back for a further infusion in about a weeks’ time and they may advise you at this time regarding any blood tests that are needed.

Beyond the fatigue and discomfort it causes, untreated iron deficiency can severely impact your quality of life, affecting daily activities, work productivity, and general well-being. It’s crucial to identify and manage iron deficiency before it progresses to more severe forms, such as anaemia.
