Everything You Need to Know About 4D Baby Scans

April 10, 20265 min read
A 4D scan shows a real-time three-dimensional videotape which displays your unborn baby in the womb. The baby shows real-time mouth opening head turning and cheek touching hand movements.

Parents who see their baby yawn and stretch and smile before birth experience a special moment. The 4D baby scan enables this experience which becomes one of the most remarkable events during any pregnancy.

The Magic of Meeting Your Baby Early

The existing ultrasound technology makes it possible for expectant parents to see their unborn child earlier than the traditional nine month waiting period. A 4D baby scan provides an extraordinary experience that allows viewers to see live footage of their unborn child in the womb, which displays their baby as a three-dimensional moving entity instead of a flat dark outline.

The staff at Chequers Health in Bolton have assisted multiple families to achieve this special milestone which they will remember forever. The guide will provide you with complete information about 4D baby scans which includes details about the results and the best time to schedule appointments and the items you need to bring for your visit.

What Is a 4D Baby Scan?

To understand 4D scans, it helps to know how they compare to earlier imaging types. A 4D scan shows a real-time three-dimensional videotape which displays your unborn baby in the womb. The baby shows real-time mouth opening head turning and cheek touching hand movements. The image quality can be so lifelike that many parents say they recognise their baby's features the moment they are born.

When Is the Best Time to Book a 4D Scan?

At Chequers Health, 4D baby scans are available from 26 weeks onwards. But when within that window gives you the best experience?

The Sweet Spot Between 26 and 32 Weeks

Your baby's facial features become fully visible between 26 and 32 weeks because your baby has developed enough to be seen and the surrounding amniotic fluid creates a natural window that allows ultrasound waves to pass through. The combination produces the most precise and complete visual representations.

After 32 Weeks

As your due date approaches, your baby grows larger and moves into their final position, which can reduce fluid around the face and limit visibility. You can still have a lovely scan later, but earlier is usually better for clearer images.

Our sonographers always do their best at any stage, and if the baby is shy, they use gentle techniques to encourage a better position.

What Can You Actually See?

The 4D scan shows different results based on the baby's current position and the woman's current week of pregnancy.

Facial Features: The shape of the nose together with the lip curvature and the dimples helps identify the person whom your baby resembles.

Expressions: The unborn foetus displays actual brain activity through its yawning and smiling and frowning and blinking movements.

Movements: The infant demonstrates its personality through thumb sucking and stretching and kicking and hand-over-face gestures.

Fingers and Toes: The current 4D scanning technology enables the recording of finger and toe movements with exceptional visual precision.

Unique Experiences: Babies' faces that portray facial expressions, create remembered moments, though all children may not show every one of the facial expressions.

Is a 4D Baby Scan Safe?

The 4D baby scans are safe because they use high-frequency sound waves instead of radiation and their use in pregnancy care has provided safe results for more than 50 years. The mother and baby both remain safe when qualified professionals perform the procedure because there are no known harmful effects.

At Chequers Health all scans are conducted by skilled sonographers who adhere to established safety procedures. Our team provides training to all staff members who work at the highest standards to deliver exceptional care and complete security during your visit.

What to Expect at Your 4D Scan Appointment

Many first-timers are not quite sure what the experience involves. Here is a gentle walk-through of what to expect when you arrive at Chequers Health:

Before You Arrive

You need to drink enough water before your scheduled appointment. The better hydration of patients results in improved imaging results because their bodies produce more amniotic fluid which surrounds the foetus. The baby will become more active during the scan because you eat a small snack before the procedure starts.

On Arrival

Our friendly team will welcome you and request that you complete a short form which requires information about your pregnancy. The sonographer or chaperone will explain to you the complete scanning process which will happen before your scan starts..

During the Scan

The scanning process requires you to lie on the scanning bed. The sonographer applies warm gel to your abdomen which he uses to operate the transducer across your bump. The 4D images appear almost instantly on the screen in front of you.

Your appointment slot lasts between 10 to 20 minutes but it might extend if the baby requires assistance to achieve a better position or if you are unable to stop observing.
Bringing Loved Ones

This is a shared experience. Your partner and family members and close friends are welcome to join you. Our Cillian Family Suite at Chequers was designed with exactly these moments in mind.
